Isn’t it amazing how a new outlook and a good night’s sleep changes
everything? We are still at the start of a New Year, allowing us the invitation to see if our goals align with our hearts desires. Do you have a positive mental attitude?
Goals for a healthier life, better job, or simply beginning again to rid ourselves of habits that no longer serve us are beneficial to a happier life. How we think, or better stated, how we choose to think, is the key.
Wait. A positive mental attitude and how we think is a choice?
Yes. With a positive mental attitude (aka PMA) we can do anything. It is a mistake to think that just because we have been addicted to negative thinking in the past, that we came from a negative family, or that is our personality, that we have no choice but to think negatively.
How does one break an addiction? First of all, they do not keep doing, thinking, eating, drinking, smoking, gambling or whatever the addiction is. Simple, right?
Wrong.
There are two ways to attempt to stop addictions. One is with a negative mind set, keeping past failures of trying to stop in the mind, fueling the failure of the memory until it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The result of negative thinking is a sure way to stay addicted and ruin any hope of self-esteem in the process. With this approach, usually the addiction becomes worse. All of this is a choice. You are not a victim unless you choose to be.
The second way to successfully stop an addiction, first of all, is to fill your thinking with positive messages, one minute at a time. It is a rewiring process. This will not feel natural at first. This is actually a physical thing. You are creating new synapses in the brain, new pathways of thinking. The more you think positively about your new goals, the more they will begin to be comfortable. It is helpful to know that it takes 21 days before any new way of thinking, or habit we are trying to break becomes a positive habit, and begin to feel comfortable and natural.
An important thing to remember when you are beginning to break with any addiction, is that your mind is going to argue back with you.
- YOUR THOUGHTS DO NOT THINK YOU.
- YOU THINK YOUR THOUGHTS.
- YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS.
- YOUR THOUGHTS ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF YOU.
The ego will fight you on this one. Expect that. This is normal. The ego likes the status quo. The ego thinks it is all powerful and can boss you around. The good news is that this is not true. When you assert your intentions and goals, and begin on your new path to freedom from addiction to negativity, all other addictions, you begin to realize the success you are having, one minute at a time, one day at a time.
No one of us is perfect. We will make mistakes in our thinking at first, but it is helpful to have some positive statements you have already thought of before hand, to effectively argue back with yourself. No one can push you around, not negative thoughts, and certainly not your ego.
I’ve given classes on the insane ego and its negative effects in our lives. Yes, the ego is insane, egotistical (of course!), arrogant, fear-based, and will do anything to keep you in the false belief that you are not in control of you.
Here are some positive statements (affirmations) with which you can affirm yourself along the path to self-healing and a happier life:
- I am worthy.
- Yes, I can.
- I can do this. (I say this one a lot when I am at the gym and want to quit!)
- I am free of _________.
- I am in control of me.
Replace the time you think negatively with a positive alternative:
- Listen to music. (Music soothes the savage beast!)
- Go for a walk.
- Join a Yoga, exercise or dance class.
- Take time out to do 15 deep breaths.
- Water and take care of your plants.
- If you have no indoor or outdoor plants, go get some.
- Read a book.
- Call a POSITIVE THINKING friend. (Do not call a NEGATIVE friend at this moment.)
With this game plan, you can have success in limiting the effects of negativity in your life, and eventually eliminate whatever has had a negative effect on you.
Keep up the good work.

Positive affirmations are the key to rewiring your subconscious. I also like to use subliminal messages or mind tracks to help speed up the process, I think it’s important for us to realize that anything worth having takes TIME! Thanks for this post was awesome
Thank you Laureen ~ Sometimes we forget exactly who we are and our Divine connection, even when we are aware and open to higher consciousness. Sometimes we slip. I like your suggestion to also use subliminal messages. They are very helpful. It is just as easy to put into our memory that we are talented and One with Spirit, as to think we are stupid and broken. Our subconscious listens to us. Thank you for that.
