The longer version of the end of Chapter 68 in 2 Enoch, known as The Slavic Book of Enoch, is the only writing I have discovered that explains the origin of Melchizedek. While Nir, the brother of Noah, is married to the old and barren Sophanim, Nir did not father Melchizedek.
First of all, Nir’s wife, Sophanim, was not only very old but also had been sterile for her entire life. When she finds herself pregnant, she is ashamed and embarrassed, and hides herself away, hoping to not be found out.
Nir calls her to him and suddenly finds her about ready to give birth and is equally ashamed and asks her why she has disgraced him in the face of all the people. Assuming she has done something wrong, he intended to send her away, back to where the disgrace in her womb began.
Horrified, Sophanim tells Nir that she is extremely confused as to how she could be so old, that her menopause and barrenness of her womb could possibly have been reversed. Still, Nir tells her to depart from him, even threatening to assault her if she does not leave, judging her to be unvirtuous.
Sophanim falls down at his feet and dies.
Nir wonders if she died because of his words but thinks to himself how grateful he is that at least he had not laid his hand on her.
More surprising still, Archangel Gabriel appears to Nir and says to him, “Do not think that your wife Sophanim has died due to your error. This child, who is to be born from her, is a righteous fruit, and one whom I shall receive into paradise so that you will not be the father of a gift from God.”
This is also the way the Virgin Mary conceived Jesus, born of God, through Archangel Gabriel.
Nir quickly hurries to get Noah. The two men decide to hide this scandal by wrapping Sophanim in black garments and digging a grave in secret. But when they returned, they saw Sophnim dead, yet her womb was giving birth. Noah says to Nir, “God is renewing the priesthood from blood related to us, just as he pleases.”
While they go out to dig the grave, a child comes out from Sophanim’s dead body and sits on the bed next to her. Nir and Noah come back and are terrified to see that the child is fully developed. The child speaks to them and blesses The Lord.
Nir and Noah look closely at the young boy, noticing the glorious appearance of the badge of priesthood on his chest.
“God is renewing the priesthood from blood related to us, just as he pleases,” Noah said to Nir.
Next Nir and Noah wash the child and dress him in garments of the priesthood and give him bread to eat. The call him Melchizedek.
Nir is known to be the last Great Priest, named after Melchizedek, before the destruction of the flood. Melchizedek is the first of the Royal Priesthood.
Melchizedek was one of those puzzling people in the Bible who appears only briefly but is mentioned again as examples of holiness and righteous living. His name means “king of righteousness,” and his title — King of Salem — means “king of peace.” He was born in Salem, in Canaan, which later became Jerusalem. In an era of paganism and idolatry, Melchizedek clung to God Most High and served him faithfully. This makes him both the King of Righteousness and Peace (Hebrews 7:2).
Realizing that it would be a grave mistake to bury Sophanim as a ruined woman who they thought had committed adultery, they take off the black garments they had put her in and wash her, then clothe her in exceptionally bright garments, build a suitable grave for her, and bury her publicly and honorably.
Noah tells Nir, “Take care of this child in secret until the proper time comes, because all of the people on earth will become treacherous and they will begin to turn away from God. Having become completely ignorant (of God), when they see him, they will put him to death in some way.”
Then Noah goes away to his own place, noticing that a great lawlessness begins to become abundant over all the earth.
Nir begins to worry excessively about the child, lamenting all the lawlessness that has begun to become abundant over all the earth, and asks The Lord what the vision and destiny about this child is, so that he too will not be joined with us in the foredooming destruction.
The Lord heeds Nir and appears to him in a night vision, saying to him, “Behold already, Nir, the great lawlessness which has come about on the earth, which I shall not tolerate anymore. Behold, I plan to send down a great destruction onto the earth. But, concerning the child, do not worry, Nir; because I, in a short while, will send My archangel Gabriel. And he will take the child and put him in the paradise of Edem.
“He will not perish along with those who must perish. As I have revealed it, Melchizedek will be My priest to all holy priests, I will sanctify him, and I will establish him so that he will be the head of the priests of the future.”
A note is added here in the text, explaining the name “Edem” is taken to mean “Eden.”
Nir arises from his sleep and blesses The Lord saying, “Blessed be The Lord, The God of my fathers, who has approved of my priesthood and the priesthood of my fathers, because by His Word, He has created a great priesthood in the womb of Sophanim, my wife. For I have no descendants. So let this child take the place of my descendants and become as my own son. You will count him in the number of your servants.
“Therefore, honor him together with your servants and great priests and me your servant, Nir. And behold, Melchizedek will be the head of priests in another generation. I know that great confusion has come and in confusion this generation will come to an end, and everyone will perish, except that Noah, my brother, will be preserved for procreation. From his tribe, there will arise numerous people, and Melchizedek will become the head of priests reigning over a royal people who serve You, O Lord.”
The child, Melchizedek, spends 40 days in Nir’s tent, foreshadowing the same number of days Jesus spends in the desert after his baptism.
The Lord commissions Archangel Gabriel to go down onto the earth to Nir, take the child Melchizedek, who is with him, and place him in the paradise of Edem for preservation prior to the flood, saying, “For the time is already approaching, and I will pour out all the water onto the earth, and everything that is on the earth will perish. And I will raise it up again, and Melchizedek will be the head of the priests in that generation.”
The funny thing is, Nir does not recognize Archangel Gabriel who appears to him. Nir is confused, and says that Melchizedek is not with him, as his way of protecting him, until Archangel Gabriel assures Nir, and promises to take the child on his wings to the paradise of Edem.
Noah is then instructed to make the ark and the flood followed.
