The Virtue of Virtues is a book for parents and their children as well as for religious educators and their students, and everyone else who is interested in teaching moral character education to their children.
The target age range is pre–teen to adult, even though it is a CCD textbook geared for sixth-grade students. This is the perfect book to coincide with public education sex education curriculums which are not at liberty to also teach morality in their programs. This was told to me by the elementary school principal when I was co-chairman with her as part of the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993.
I had said, “We need a curriculum on ethics and morality to go along with the sex education program.”
“Whose ethics should we teach?” the school principal asked me.
As a direct result of not being able to initiate a morality component of the public school sex education program in 1993 in Massachusetts, many parents asked me to write this textbook as a supplemental curriculum, since I was also a news correspondent for the Milford Daily News at that time, as well as being a CCD teacher in the Catholic Church for 23 years.
The Virtue of Virtues can easily be taught by parents to their children, and by religious educators to their students.
This book is based on my life then as a reporter, answering the questions: Who, What, Why, When, Where and How in each of the seven lessons.
What? refers to a current day fiction story, which deals with the lesson theme, and is followed by the Why? section that asks questions about that story. How? is a written activity. When? is a scripture-based story, while Who? illustrates how the message is meant for them. Each lesson concludes with Where? calling students to act out their faith here and now.
The seven lessons may be taught by parents one hour each night for one week, once hour a week for seven weeks, or one hour per month for seven months as I taught it in the parish. Parents have the opportunity to teach their children individually or in a comfortable setting with other parents and their children.
Virtues are the missing link in today’s society, in every country in the world. If everyone practiced these virtues at home, in neighborhoods, in places of employment, governments and in financial institutions, the world would discover more humane, compassionate and understanding solutions for all of the troubles faced by the world today.
